Life After Gold Coast Golf School

    By admin | September 3, 2007

    From: Jason H
    Subject: My experience at GC

Before attending the Gold Coast Golf School, despite playing the game of golf for more than 15 years, I knew my golf swing was flawed and that it was holding me back from improving my game beyond 16 handicap (and hitting that handicap was on my good days).

I also realized that I was not going to attain my life long goal of scoring an even par with the swing I had given the lack of driving distance and limited accuracy as well as my fragile state of mind when it came to my golf swing.

Despite numerous lessons I received from pros in Korea, I was not able to improve my game and get comfortable with my swing. Simply put, I lacked confidence in my game.

When I arrived at the school, I was hoping to gain the feel for a “correct” swing and improve distance of my driver and irons. I also hoped to improve short game and psychological approach to the game.

The one phrase that describes my 1 week experience at the school is “Wow, I never knew I can do this” and got out of the school much more than what I bargained for. Lawrie (my teaching pro for the week) did not try to revamp my swing nor did they try to “sculpture” my swing positions like the lessons I have gotten from other pros.

He taught me the physics of swing and how I can apply the correct physics to improve my swing. For me, that started with the right grip, especially the right hand grip. Once I was able to apply the right grip on my clubs, my back swing and downswing dramatically improved almost “automatically”.

Perhaps more importantly, they taught me where my state of mind should be at before each swinging and how I can focus on one single target. Before attending the school, when I addressed the ball, some of my thoughts were “need to hit this hard”, “need to avoid a bunker on the left”, “I topped the ball previously, can I hit it well this time?”.

    All negative or counterproductive thoughts.

Those thoughts caused me to tense up which caused uneven swing tempo and resulted in very inconsistent results. I never realized how pwerful the mind can be and how much it can either assist or hurt my golf swing. The good thing is that NOW I KNOW, thanks to Lawrie.

Another major difference between this school and previous lessons from Korea is that Lawrie introduced me to next concepts (and the reasons behind those concepts) only when I was ready to absorb them. Hence, I was not confused and was able to apply those concepts to my swing immediately.

Finally, having lessons at the school allowed me to receive much of the lessons on the golf course where it matters the most. I was able to get immediate feedback on each shot and drastically improve my ability to concentrate on the right “thought” immediately before the swing. It helped me to vastly improve course strategy my confidence in my “new” swing.

So, what is the result of the one week lesson with Lawrie at GCGS?
I am much more confident in my game, longer distance and more accuracy (with all clubs) due to a better impact on the ball, wiser course management, and better scores (I am consistently shooting low to mid 80s and improving). Most of all, I am having much more fun playing this game.

I know now that attaining my goal of hitting an even par is now a matter of when not how…

Thanks all and hope to see you soon… Most sincerely yours, Jason Hwang
